Privacy Policy
At The Forehand Lab, we're committed to protecting your personal information. This Privacy Policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights. Please read it carefully — Section 3 describes how we may use videos you record to improve our models, and you should understand that before recording sessions.
1. Information We Collect
When you register or use The Forehand Lab, we collect:
- Account information: User ID, name, profile image, email address, date joined
- Device information: Device type, operating system, device token (for push notifications)
- Session data: Drill results, measurements (e.g., ball-height-over-net readings), skill tree progress, session timestamps
- Video recordings: Video you capture during drill sessions (stored on your device by default; see Section 3 for how these may be used)
- Usage and analytics data to understand how the app is used and improve the experience
All personal data is encrypted during transmission and stored securely.
2. How We Use Your Data
We use your data to:
- Provide and improve our services
- Authenticate your account and keep it secure
- Deliver drill feedback, measurements, and progression
- Send push notifications (e.g., practice reminders, product updates)
- Personalize your experience and curriculum recommendations
You may opt out of non-essential notifications at any time in app settings.
3. Video Recordings and Model Training
The Forehand Lab relies on computer vision to measure what happens on court. To keep improving the accuracy of our ball tracking, court calibration, and measurement systems, we may use videos you record in the app as training data for our machine learning models.
Here's what that means in plain terms:
- What we use: Video clips captured during drill sessions, along with the detections our system made (ball positions, court keypoints, etc.).
- What we use it for: Training and evaluating the models that detect balls, identify court lines, and measure shots. We also use this data to diagnose failures (e.g., missed detections, calibration errors).
- How it's handled: When videos are used for training, they are stored securely and accessed only by authorized personnel and contractors bound by confidentiality. We do not attach your name, email, or profile to training data.
- Who else sees it: We may share video data with ML infrastructure providers (e.g., cloud storage, annotation services, model training platforms) strictly for the purpose of improving our models. These providers are bound by contract to protect the data and not use it for their own purposes.
- People in the background: Because videos are recorded on public or semi-public courts, other people may appear in them. You are responsible for ensuring you have the right to record in your location and that you have informed anyone who may appear in your videos.
- Opting out: You can opt out of contributing videos to model training at any time in app settings under Privacy → Contribute to Model Training. Opting out does not affect your ability to use the app or view your own recordings.
If you delete a video from your account, it is removed from our active systems. However, videos that have already been incorporated into trained models cannot be retroactively extracted from those models — the learned patterns remain, but the underlying video does not.
4. Sharing of Data
We do not sell your personal data. We do not share your personal data with third parties for advertising or marketing purposes.
We share data only in these situations:
- Service providers: Cloud storage, analytics, authentication, payment processing, and ML infrastructure providers who help us operate the app. They are bound by contract to protect your data.
- Legal requirements: When required by law, subpoena, or to protect the safety and rights of our users or the public.
- Business transfers: If The Forehand Lab is acquired or merged, your data may transfer to the new owner under the terms of this policy.
5. Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Access or edit your personal data from within the app
- Export a copy of your data
- Delete your account and associated data from within the app
- Opt out of model training at any time (see Section 3)
- Manage notifications in app settings
Once you delete your account, your personal data is permanently removed from our active systems within 30 days, except where we are legally required to retain it.
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws like the GDPR (Europe), CCPA/CPRA (California), or similar regulations — including the right to restrict processing, object to processing, or file a complaint with a data protection authority. Contact us to exercise these rights.
6. Data Retention
We retain your data only as long as needed to provide our services or meet legal obligations:
- Account data: Retained while your account is active, and deleted within 30 days of account deletion
- Session data and measurements: Retained while your account is active
- Videos: Retained on your device and in your account until you delete them; videos contributed to model training may be retained in our training datasets for as long as those datasets are in active use
- Analytics data: Aggregated and anonymized analytics may be retained indefinitely
7. Security
We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your data, including encryption in transit (TLS) and at rest, secure cloud storage with access controls, and regular security reviews. No system is perfectly secure, but we work hard to protect your information.
8. Children's Privacy
The Forehand Lab is not intended for children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with data, please contact us and we will delete it. If your videos may contain minors (e.g., junior players), you are responsible for having appropriate permissions from their parents or guardians before recording.
9. International Users
The Forehand Lab is operated from the United States. If you use the app from outside the United States, your data will be transferred to and processed in the United States, which may have different data protection laws than your country. By using the app, you consent to this transfer.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as the product evolves. When we make significant changes — especially to how we use video data — we'll notify you through the app or by email before the changes take effect.
